Attendance: You can’t win if you don’t play!
Regular school attendance is a very important factor to school success. Students enter the school at 8:30 am, prepare for the day, and get right down to their daily instruction.
When a student arrives late they miss valuable instruction, and it takes the teacher away from other students, as the teacher has to pause and review the lesson. We expect that students will be here on time ready to learn. You could say, 80% of success in life is just showing up!
Lockers and personal property
Junior High students are privileged to have their own personal locker. They use it for personal belongings and to keep their shoes, books, coats etc. They must use a school issued lock and be responsible for keeping it clean and in good condition. Lockers are considered school property and may be searched if necessary.
The school is not responsible for articles lost or stolen from lockers.
Recess Break: Be prepared everyday for Outdoors!
Students at Amherst Cove have a recess break at 10:00 am and a lunch break at 11:45 am. We believe that fresh air and outdoor play is important and we try to have students outdoors as much as possible. Always prepare for an outdoor day with proper outdoor wear (clothing and footwear) for the weather conditions, as you can expect that we will be going out. If not, indoor recesses will follow duty teacher rules and supervision.
Late Arrivals/Early Departures:
Accurate attendance is very important for student safety and record keeping at school. Any student arriving late, must SIGN-IN at the office before heading to class. Likewise, all early departures must happen through SIGN-OUT at the front office before leaving.
Student Safety:
In order to help us ensure the safety of all our students and staff, we expect your cooperation in a few key areas:
- ACC is SCENT and NUT FREE.
At ACC we have multiple people at the school who have life-threatening allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. For that reason, food products that may contain these are not allowed at school.
Also, people are becoming more and more sensitive to scents and fragrances, so while at school come scent-free.
Student Support/School Counseling Services:
We have multiple layers of support available at ACC and are accessed mainly through our counseling services, which is available to all students at Amherst Cove Consolidated. These services are intended to facilitate the educational, personal, social, emotional and career development of students and are provided through consultation with Ms. Noonan, a school counsellor specifically trained for this role. She will be at ACC on Days 2, 4, and 6 and appointments can be requested through your homeroom teacher.
Cell phone policy for Students
Cell phones are powerful devices and with them come a great deal of personal and social responsibility. Students and parents need to realize that communication through the main office is our preference, as we need to manage the safety of our students throughout the learning day. However, since cell phones are a big part of society today, we all need to teach appropriate use. As such, we will allow students to bring their cell phones to ACC provided they sign and submit a Policy Use Permission form.
- Students need to realize having the use of cell phones on school property is a privilege, not a right. The student and legal guardian must accept the terms outlined on the “ACC Cell Phone Permission Form.”
- The school staff reserves the right to revoke privileges associated with this use.
- At ACC we cannot have cell phones interrupting or distracting students from the learning environment, so cellphones are to be powered off and put away during class times UNLESS the classroom teacher has given permission for a specific activity.
- Devices must be used in an appropriate manner … Absolutely, No pictures/videos or posting of these or negative comments towards others are permitted at any time.
- Devices are not permitted in the bathrooms or changerooms.
Staff reserve the right to confiscate a phone if used inappropriately.
Depending on severity of offence … the following will apply:
1 st offence – Phone taken away and given back at end of day.
2 nd offence –Phone taken away, stored in office for parent to pick up.
3 rd offence – Phone taken away and parent meeting set to determine length of time confiscated.
Theft/Damage Disclaimer
ACC accepts no responsibility for theft or damage of any student electronic device. (However, students are encouraged to record their device’s serial numbers to have available in case they go missing.)
Homework
Homework is always a hot topic in Junior High and although we know you are all busy with your lives, homework will be a part of your career as a student. Research shows that homework is one of the most effective strategies to improve learning! Each teacher has their own expectations around their assignments and it is up to each student to be responsible and meet these expectations.
Students Achieve Access to marks
Students in Junior high are able to access their course grades on the SAS website. Parents and students have accounts generated by SAS and it is recommended you keep your login and pw info private. If you need a new password, please see Mr.Q.
Report Cards
The school year at ACC is divided into three terms; each with a report card reflecting current individual student progress. While marks on SAS appear as percentages, our Report Card converts these to a 4 – point scale.
Evaluations and Exams
Students are evaluated on a continuous basis, and marks go in SAS as either Formative (forming skills) or Summative (skill evaluation). Unlike high school, there are no formal examination periods scheduled at ACC however, we do write provincial exams in grades 3, 6, and 9 and sometimes are asked to participate in other national assessments.
Bus Expectations
The school bus is an extension of the classroom. School rules apply while students are travelling on the bus. Misbehavior by a student while travelling on the bus is reported to the parents/guardians and, if necessary, to the school principal, who will deal with the student according to the Board policy. Repeated misbehavior may cause a student to lose the privilege of travelling on the bus.
***A note from a parent/guardian is required if a student requires a bus pass for a day in order to travel on another bus. These are obtained at the school office. *If a student is suspended from school, bus privileges are also suspended.
Dress Code – be respectful of yourself and others.
Our school wishes to promote an atmosphere of respect, with a focus on learning. Taking into account changing fashion trends and safety considerations, the following regulations will be in effect at this school and pertains to all school activities including field trips, dances, and extracurricular activities.
- Students’ clothing cannot depict messages, whether written or picture form, which are profane, demeaning, promote illegal or inappropriate activity, or promote the use of alcohol or drugs.
- Students must wear footwear for health reasons and in the event of the need for a sudden evacuation of the building.
- Shorts and skirts must extend to cover the upper leg and be approximately finger-tip in length.
- Hats and Hoods are not permitted indoors at school at any time.
- Clothing must completely cover the stomach through to the upper chest areas. Strapless tops are not permitted. Students may not wear clothing that reveals undergarments. Pants must be worn at waist height. It is recommended that a student’s clothing and materials be very clearly marked with the student’s name and other identification.
All staff members reserve the right to interpret the terms of the dress code. Students who are not in compliance will be asked to change into clothing which meets the dress code standard before entering class.
School Lunch Program – Fuel for the mind and body!
Here at ACC we have been part of the pilot program for the government Lunch program. Students and parents are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to have lunches delivered to school on a daily basis. Lunches can be ordered on the government website by googlingon the Government of PEI Healthy school lunch program.
Library books & Textbooks
These are great resources for students to enhance and enrich the learning. We ask that students take care to ensure that their books are kept in good condition as they are used for multiple years and have significant cost. If they are lost or damaged, students will be responsible.
Extra-curricular activities
Here at ACC we do our best to offer a variety of athletic, musical, art, and other activities for our students. We encourage students to participate in all areas of school life. Team sports, clubs and extra activities are excellent ways to connect and experience more than just the classroom aspect of school. We currently have Student Leadership, Intramurals, Volleyball, Flag football, Soccer, Cross-country.
Bullying, Zero Tolerance and hands free
At ACC we follow the direction of the Public Schools Branch in enforcing a Zero Tolerance to any form of bullying. “Zero Tolerance” means that teachers and administration will not ignore any unacceptable acts. Often many forms of discipline may be used in consequence and may range from detention to parent involvement to suspension or even police involvement.
